As the old saying goes "no foot, no horse" - so there is ALWAYS a market for a good farrier.  A farrier is someone who takes care of the horse's foot and hooves.  Many farriers work for themselves, and go around to local stables to trim hooves and add horse shoes.  Here are a couple videos that show you what is involved in being a farrier.  The guy below is a professional farrier in action.

The next video below shoes how to pull a shoe.  This professional farrier teaches how anyone can pull a shoe, just in case you would need to before you can get to the farrier.

Grooming is a job that every stable needs.  A good groom is an asset, and can find work in a variety of different stables, from show horse stables to racing facilities.  If you are a good groom, you may also be asked to tack up the horses and get them ready for their jobs.  Grooms can work up the level from tacking up horses, to lounging and exercizing, on up to training.  Here is a video that shows what will be required while grooming horses for a living.

People who tack up horses for work may also be an owner, a groom, etc - but here are some videos on what is required when you are getting a horse tacked up for a workout.
The video below shows you how to add splint boots.

After the splint boots are on your horse, if you are going to use them, you'll need to start saddling the horse.  There are a variety of different saddle blankets and pads to use, but the biggest point is making sure they are even with the horses spine, and that they cover the withers (or top point of the shoulders) so that the saddle doesn't rub that area.  Here is a video on the correct placement of saddle pads.

Here is the correct way to place an English saddle.

Attaching the girth to an English saddle.

Personally I like Western more than English. ;-)  Here is the correct way to place a Western Saddle on a horse.  Keep in mind, if you are grooming and tacking up horses, you will usually need to know both English and Western tack, and how to correctly position the tack on each horse.

Boy have I had fun attempting to bridle some horses.  When you work in a stable, you will find a few horses that want absolutely nothing with putting a bit in their mouth.  (can you blame them?)  They will raise their heads very high, and pull all kinds of ineresting tricks to prevent you from getting them bridled.  A well trained horse will accept a bit with ease, but not ALL horses are well trained.

Here is a video on getting some exercise going!

Here are some tips on Free Longing, which is one of my favorite techniques.  I would rather free longe than use a longe line, but a longe line does have it's place in training.

Monty Roberts teaches a fearful horse how to load on and off a horse trailer.  I prefer this method MUCH more than whipping a horse as I have seen others do in the past.  The horse must be guided to make the correct choices, instead of being beaten so that it will forever be affraid of the site of a horse trailer.

Another method by Monty Roberts of gentling and handling a young horse who has never been touched by humans.

Here is one of the coolest horse training methods around called Parelli. I did a lot of this with my first horse, without having any clue as to what I was doing.  We were just great friends. :-)  This method came out way after I worked in stables for a living, but I wish I would have access to this information when I was younger.  Could have taught a lot of horses, and PEOPLE a few things, that's for sure.

And it would have been a lot more like this instead! :-)
